Environment thumbnails sketches

Still working on perspective, going to practice some specific things the next few day. Here I did some environment thumbnails to think about and practice one-point perspective. Also keeping composition in mind, check out conceptart.org for some good lessons about that. Might pick one or two and detail out later, or maybe I’ll just design new and better ones. Lots of fun to think up these environments. Probably doesn’t look like much, but this first step is very important to get right for new designs.Sverre_Thune_25-07-14_landskap_skisser

Next: two-point.

Fundamentals

How will I become great at drawing and painting? Only way to get there is practicing fundamentals for a long time: forever. What are these fundamentals?

  1. Perspective
  2. Anatomy
  3. Composition
  4. Lighting

Perspective

Learning perspective is essential. I am reading and doing exercises from Scott Robertson’s book “How to draw: Drawing and Sketching Objects and Environments from Your Imagination”. I feel I can draw a pretty straight line now, but those ellipses will take quite some time and practice to get consistent! Scott Robertson’s DVD on drawing and perspective are also great. It covers the same techniques, but actually seeing somebody good demonstrating is very helpful. That reminds me that the book actually have an app that links to great video demonstrations when you scan certain pages with your phone! CtrlPaint’s video series on perspective are also great, especially to get a good mindset for how to use perspective for sketching.

I did some more perspective sketches. Until now, including these, I have just randomly placed the converging lines on the page. Therefore they are usually wrong and because they are not hitting the correct vanishing points. Today I learned how to easily draw my own grids, so now I can actually start drawing in correct perspective. I could have printed out grids or used some templates for Photoshop, but I feel that actually understanding how to create them myself helps a lot.

Purpose, Perspective sketches

Let’s try to make this place a little bit more interesting! While just posting drawings is fine, I thought that writing about why I do them and what the purpose is will give this place a little more life.

I have decided I am going to become a concept artist or illustrator. Probably a concept artist. I realized this earlier this summer when I started to practice drawing more intensely and discovered I really love it!

How can I reach this goal? First I have to become very good at drawing and painting. Secondly, I have to be noticed either by clients with projects I can work on, or by people who want to buy what I do directly. Preferably a combination!

I guess my current work is not the worst ever, but still there is not a lot of it and I have a long way to “professional” level in my opinion. Therefore, I am going to practice a lot. Every day. For a very long time.

So how to be noticed? From what I have read, watched and listened to: create fantastic work and help people. Both are maybe obvious, but how to actually get there and doing it is not. However, I will try, by recording my path towards this goal here. I will write about the information I have gathered and find relevant, and post my studies. Formulating my thoughts precisely here will force me to think more thoroughly through what I do, which will hopefully help me learn better. I admit it is mostly for my own gain, at least initially, but if somebody discovers this place maybe they can learn something from my experiences too!

Most of what I write will summarize what I remember from the countless videos and podcasts I listen to while drawing, or something I read. Therefore, something I take for granted might be missing. Feel free to ask about anything, I will be glad to try to answer!

Today I learned how to mirror curves in perspective, here are some sketches I did:
